A RECIPE OF LOVE

For God sent not His Son to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:17

One enjoyable treat mom baked when I was a child was brown bread. It wasn’t super sweet, but what intrigued me was its shape. This bread was baked in empty vegetable cans, coming out moist, brown, and round with all the lines that were in the tin cans. It was delicious! Mom was great in the kitchen, and whatever she cooked or baked was one of her many ways to display her devotion for us, because her food was made from her recipes of love.

For those who want to try my mom’s recipe for brown bread, here are the instructions: 2 cups graham or whole wheat flour, ½ cup all-purpose white flour, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 cups buttermilk, ½ cup molasses, 1 cup seedless raisins. Combine and mix all ingredients well. Spoon into three 16 ounce well-greased tin cans. Let stand ½ hour before baking at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

God also has a love recipe for us--Grace! He intrigues us as He comes birthed by a woman as a baby. He is fully God and fully human with flesh, bones, and blood. He exhibits emotions of anger, joy, and sadness like humans. He also has physical needs like thirst, fatigue, and pain. His painful death and miraculous resurrection give us spiritual freedom as an adopted child of God. 1 John 3:1 says, "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God. . ."

For those who want to try God’s recipe for spiritual healing, here are the instructions--John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Like mom’s bread, to eat and enjoy it, you must open the bottom end of the can and push the bread out. We must trust Christ to open our hearts, push out the old, and let Him fill us with His Spirit. We will become a pleasing aroma to God by His authentic forgiving recipe of love and grace.

Thank you, Father God, for providing us your healing love. We give you all the glory through Christ Jesus. Amen.
