THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!  Romans 11:33

A journalist goes to a seminar of brilliant scientists and physicists from all over the world. This journalist's job is to write an article about the symposium for the newspaper.

The subject matter is way over the head of the journalist. The seminar begins with the first speaker who talks about quantum mechanics, protons, neutrons, atoms, and such; the writer's lost. When a physicist speaks of subatomic particle decays, wave function collapse, and quantum key distribution, the writer may understand three of those words: decay, collapse, and distribution. The journalist went to school, taking language and writing to learn how to eloquently and masterfully put words to the paper, not linear algebra, calculus, physiology, or advanced chemistry.

The Bible is a book of masterfully written works of individual people from different time periods. These messages were given by divine inspiration. The writers, however, could only convey from the color pallet given to them by God. God did not explain nature at the smallest scales of energy levels of atoms and subatomic particles. There were no chemistry labs, computers, airplanes, or smartphones, to color their writings. The writer could understand the forming of Adam from dust. God did not explain what was in that dust: DNA, cells, genes, and chromosomes, which were all in the make-up of a human.

The Bible writers were limited in full knowledge, just as we, the readers, are also limited in our understanding. We can study to become somewhat enlightened, but how could we decipher the transcendent God. We have never even traveled outside our one little universe. Even the writer of Psalm 139:6 admits, "That kind of knowledge is too much for me; it's so high above me that I can't reach it."

God is so far above our understanding that we may never fully comprehend Him. These four things we can know: 1. Science and God do not clash but are orchestrated together masterfully. 2. We were made for relationship with God. 3. We are supremely loved and of great importance. 4. Each one of us will have effects on this universe forever.

Do we have an unquenchable thirst for the knowledge of God? Taking a long walk in the park will bring evidence that God is the author of science. Studying quantum mechanics and interaction will enlighten us on our effects on the universe. Reading the Bible will show us the unfathomable love of God. Opening our hearts to the Holy Spirit will reveal some knowledge of God. As we study, listen, and wait, the part will one day become whole.

Help me, Oh Lord, to understand you more each day. Thank you for your love for one little person in this vast universe, in this particular time of space--me! Amen
