PAIR OF OLD BIRDS

For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.
Matthew 18:20

There were two young cardinals, the male with his bright red breast and the female with her style of beauty, perched on the picket fence. They were up to something. The female landed on the side of the banana tree and started tearing away pieces off a dead branch. She dropped her first long piece and went back to work to procure another one. Once she succeeded, she followed the male who had already made his flight up into the towering oak tree.

There was another pair of “birds” sitting on the back porch, observing all of this, my husband, John, and me. We are two old birds who find pleasure in a piping hot cup of coffee and one another. We also enjoy watching God's nature and hearing a word from Him.

I usually read a devotional. Then John and I hold hands, and each day, we rotate to say a prayer. We thank God for our day and, we thank Him for His many blessings. We pray for our children, our grandchildren, our church, our community, and our nation. We lift the sick. We ask for God's help for our tasks of the day, and we ask for His direction. Our prayers vary, but it's just our time to connect in several ways.

So, out in the backyard are two young birds up to something, but upon the back porch are two not-so-young birds. They have already built their nest, had their children, and kicked them out of the nest. So, are these two old birds up to something? Why, yes, they are! They are gathering together in Christ's name, clinging to His promise of Matthew 18:20. These two birds, John and I, maybe aged, but together we meet with one who is older than us--the Ancient of Days.

Thank you, God, for meeting us each day as we come into communion with you. Amen.
