TURNING A BLIND EYE

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  John 8:31-32

The man was deep into drugs. Along with the drugs were lies, sexual promiscuity, a manipulative manner, and a mean spirit. He had a family that refused to see the problem. They were enablers, bailing him out of jail many times and hiring lawyers to get the sentences dropped or reduced. His family loved him and wanted to see him get well, but they couldn’t see that a condoning love was making him worse. They were turning a blind eye to the root problem.

“Turning a blind eye,” is an idiom meaning to ignore something or to pretend not to notice something. We have all done it at times, but neglecting to realize something does not negate the facts. We don’t like to admit our faults or our downfalls. We want to pass the blame elsewhere. We primarily “hide our heads in the sand,” another idiom.

It is challenging, indeed, to open our eyes and face the truth because the truth sometimes hurts. The truth is threefold: 1. We all sin. 2. We can become addicted to our sin. 3. We are not able to help ourselves. However, there is also a threefold truth that is good: 1. God provided healing for our sickness of sin by sending His Son, Jesus, to be the cure. 2. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He will help us by His Holy Spirit. 3. If we face our particular sin head-on, and confess it to Christ, He will cleanse and make us whole. We may have to work at getting out of our addiction, but now we have a Warrior who gives us the strength we need to fight our battles.

Don’t “hide your head in the sand” or “turn a blind eye” to the facts. Come to Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life, and you will be free.

Dear Father, I accept your Son as my Lord and Savior. I confess my sin and ask for forgiveness. Please help me to get out of this cesspool of evil. Cleanse me and make me whole. Thank you, Lord, for hearing my prayer. Amen.
