BALANCING ACT

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.  2 Peter 3:18

Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote a song titled,  “Getting To Know You.” The lyrics to the last few lines of this song are as follows: “Getting to know you. Getting to feel free and easy. When I am with you, getting to know what to say. Haven’t you noticed suddenly I’m bright and breezy? Because of all the beautiful and new things I’m learning about you day by day.”

The day we commit ourselves to a relationship with Jesus, we become one with Him. We make a vow to Him in various ways, but the relationship does not end there. We should burn with a desire to gain Godly wisdom, striving to know Him more today than we did yesterday.

At the same time, we need to understand that we will never know Him fully. We need not become so engrossed in dissecting Christ that our focus is on our studies, not the heart of Christ.  If we are gaining wisdom but lacking in compassion, love, gentleness, humility, patience, or kindness, we are missing the mark.

Learning beautiful new things about God is spiritually healthy, but becoming anxious in solving the mystery of God is not. Our walk will be bright, breezy, free and easy with a peaceful attitude as we grow to the point of trusting an unfathomable God. There is a healthy balance in life: gain wisdom but trust in a mystery that need not be fully solved. Rachel Evans says it well, “The moment we figure God out, God ceases to be God. Maybe it’s time to embrace the mystery and let ourselves off the hook.”

Dear Christ, Help me to grow in Your wisdom each and every day, and help me to trust even when I don’t fully understand.  Amen
