KNOWING GOD

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

How exactly can we know God?

When we look at God as portrayed the Old Testament, we see more of a dictator. We have creation, annihilations, war, rules, regulations, takeovers of land, and very limited accessibility to Him. He is kind of scary, unapproachable, condemning, and somewhat exclusive God of the Israelite children.

The New Testament portrayal of God is quite different. Everything changed when God came in the form of flesh to this earth. It was at this point we began to know God on a different level, a personal one in an intimate relationship with all mankind. He became not just the God whose name was too holy to speak, but He became our heavenly Father, the name which appears 245 times in the New Testament. John’s gospel uses the name Father 100 times, and Paul acknowledged God as our Father in the opening of each of his letters.

So which God can we know? We can know them both as one because He is One.  He is the Creator. He did use the Israelite nation to be the seed of the Messiah, but He is also the personal Father Redeemer for anyone who receives Him.  Look at how He made the blind to see, the lame to walk, the thirsty to be quenched, and the hungry to be fed. He also welcomed the children, the tax collectors, the prostitutes, and the common man. Accept Him as your Lord and Savior. Listen to His words of love, forgiveness, and hope. Speak His words of compassion, mercy, and grace.

How exactly can we know God? We can know God when we come to know Jesus.

I want to know You more, each and every day, Father God. Help me to grow in your wisdom and strength. Through Jesus I pray, Amen.
