HONESTY

He who has received His testimony has set his seal to this, that God is true. John 3:33
Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. John 17:17

The lyrics to the Billy Joel song called Honesty are sad but true: “Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue. Honesty is hardly ever heard and mostly what I need from you.” Unfortunately, honesty is a very lonely word because it is so hard to obtain. In fact, there is only one place you can really obtain true honesty.

We believe that certain people such as our parents, our friends, a spouse, a teacher, or a preacher should always be honest with us, but the truth is they sometimes tell us lies.  It crushes our spirits and fills us with defeat. This defeat does not even compare to the defeat we heap upon ourselves when we feed our own minds with lies. Sometimes we reach a point where these lies begin to look like truths to us.

This is one of the reasons it is a difficult to grasp--God. We have been, misled, conned, told fables, wives tales, little white lies, and plain fabricated lies. Why wouldn’t we just think that the story in the Bible is a lie also?  Just before he died, the brilliant physicist, Stephen Hawking concluded in his last book, “There is no God.” He had a brilliant mind, but he lacked a brilliant heart of faith. Stephen exchanged the truth of God for a lie. Romans 1:25

Faith is wrapped up in the truth of God. The author of lies is Satan. If we want to get to the real truth, we need to come to God in confession and trust. We open our arms, close our eyes, tune our spiritual ears to listen, and we fall into the unknown. It is there in our fall of faith, He will gather us in His arms and tell us the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Honesty is a lonely word because the only one who is truly honest is God. If you are desperately needing the truth, if someone you thought you could trust let you down, don’t despair. I suggest you turn to Christ. At the feet of Jesus is the only place where when you seek honesty, you will find honesty. Titus 1:2 says that God cannot lie. He is the way...the TRUTH...and the life, and that, my friend, is no lie!

Dearest Christ Jesus, I come to your throne where I know you will give me the truth, even if it hurts. I am humbly grateful. Amen.
