Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises. Psalm 98:4
We find comfort in music--this is why so many walk around with another appendage from their ears, called earbuds. We escape into the melody and words to drown out the world around us and to go to a place of our most needed emotional fix. Whether it be lack of energy, joy, serenity, comfort, or freedom, we can escape to a place that fills that void.
A man who is blind listens to the words, “I once was lost, but now I’m found. Was blind but now I see.” The paraplegic sings, “Lord lift me up, and let me stand.” The boy whose parents are fighting yet again, drowns out the fury with, “All we need is love.” The old man grieving the loss of his wife hums the melody, “We shall meet on that beautiful shore.” A mother missing her son who seldom calls remembers the words to a song they used to sing, “Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight, someone’s thinking of you and loving you tonight.”
Yes, music fills our souls, but the true music of the soul is the melody of love and praise God places in our hearts when we turn to Him. Instead of revenge, God will give us a melody of forgiveness. When we are lonely, He gives us words of companionship. When we are old and dying, He gives us music of heaven. When we are sad, He wipes away our tears with his music of comfort. When we are bone tired, He gives us His melody of revival. He is called the God of all comfort, and when we hold Him in our hearts, He gives us a song of praise in our soul. In this we can find relief.
From Moses, to David, to Paul, music was an important part of their lives. Songs of praise were written to worship the Creator of all things. And in turn, all things sing back their praise to Him: from birds’ warbles, to humming mosquitoes, from the croaking of frogs, to the whistling tune of the wind, from a bubbling stream, to a singing cricket. A line in a song titled, This Is My Father’s World says, “All nature sings as around me rings the music of the spheres.”
Come to Christ, and let Him fill your heart and mind with His heavenly music. Then sing at the top of your voice in praise to Him. When we are busy giving praise in song to God, it’s difficult to be angry, sad, or defeated. It is sure to bring you solace, hope, strength, peace, and love.
Thank You for Your beautiful music that soothes our souls. In our hearts You place your melody of love. In Christ Jesus, Amen
