Do what God’s teaching says; don’t just listen and do nothing. When you only sit and listen, you are fooling yourselves. James 1:22
I am aware of all the rules for safe driving practices, but if I ignored them to speed down the highway, at a close distance to the car in front of me, weaving in and out of lanes, not using my directional blinker, radio blaring, no seatbelt, and texting on my phone, I am setting myself up for an accident. It’s not enough to know the rules; It’s important to follow them if I want to avoid an accident.
When we know the truth, we should live the truth. We need to not only listen and do nothing, but face the situation and apply the truth principles that we have at our disposal.
Several years ago there was a cataclysmic incident on a deep well oil platform causing the death of eleven employees and an estimated 4.9 million gallons of oil to be dumped into the water. Reports show that over 400 items were non compliant with safety rules. The problem wasn’t with the rules, the problem was they were not applied. As a result, the outcome was disastrous.
The most important rule Jesus taught, was to love God and love others. Our love should overshadow all other things. We can attempt to live a Godly life by listening, reading, and applying lessons we have learned from the word, but if we fill our minds with religious teaching, and our tongues with Christian rhetoric, yet our actions are absent of love, we are fooling ourselves. However, we can’t fool God. He sees right through our facade.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and saw something out of place? We normally not only look in the mirror, but fix the problem before we face the world. We need to stop and take a long look in the mirror of our soul. Is there something drastically out of place, or do we see a reflection of Jesus? Take time to read the rest of James 1.
