ON THE BENCH

Come near to God and he will come near to you. James 4:8

When I was a child, all the old men in their bib overalls would sit on the benches, in front of the courthouse square. They would put their heads together to have their daily chit-chat time. The town was tiny, so there was never much action, but they always seemed to have conversation. They probably talked about the old days, or the price of soybeans, their aches and pains, weather patterns, or maybe even about a new widow in town. They were cute. Like little birds lined up on the telephone wire.

There is something nice about sitting on a park bench to watch your children play, to listen to nature, or to have a conversation with a friend. On the other hand, being benched as an athlete, is not fun. Life can be like that. Some days we are made to sit on the bench and we are not happy at all about it. Some days, we find solace, peace, and rest from our work to sit on the bench. And some days, we kneel in prayer at a bench in the church sanctuary. We commune with our best friend about all the things that matter to us.

The Lord yearns for us to have a daily chit-chat with Him. He wants to hear about our longings for the old days, and our dreams for the coming years. He wants us to ask for rain, and good crops, and companionship. He wants us to ask for the new tires we need on our car, or for our lost keys, or for the splinter in our hand. He wants us to lift up our aches, pains, sickness, and sorrow. He wants to hear our gratitude for all His blessings. He cares about every little detail, even things that we think are too mundane for an Almighty God . We must remember that nothing is trivial to Him because our communication is like love words to His ears. It shows that we value Him in every way.

His desire is for our fellowship. Many times in our lives we have heard these words from people, “Not now! Wait a minute. Let me finish this first. I don’t have time right now.” We have even said this to our children, coworkers, neighbors, and friends. God never says those words; He always makes time because of His great love for us. He calls us His sheep, so I imagine He views us just like I view the cute little birds lined up on the telephone wire. Yet He knows each bird (us) by our name. Take time to sit on the bench, or anywhere for that matter, and put your head together with God to have a nice little talk.

Thank you God for wanting us to communicate with you through Jesus, Amen
