Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your
good works, and glorify your Father, which is in heaven. Matthew 5:16
Since our family moved to a huge city over 22 years ago, the
night light pollution makes it impossible to see many stars in the night sky.
We are reminded of its beauty when we go to visit some friends that have a home
out in the county, far from any little towns. The night is black there.
The first night we went there, I looked up at the sky and
was dumbfounded. I hadn’t seen stars like that in years. As far as the eye
could see, shown little twinkle lights in the heavens. The Milky Way, the many
planets, and the constellations kept my neck craned, looking upward in awe.
Sometimes we could even see a satellite cross the horizon. Even
though satellites do not have lights, and they are nearly 200 to 300 miles
away, the light of the sun glistening off them making it look as if they were
illuminated from within.
I wonder if as a Christian, an illumination of the refection
of Christ, can be seen in me. The
blackness of sin, sorrow, guilt, fear, doubt and evil surrounds us. The world
needs light to see, so we can find our way through the murky darkness. I want
to be His light in this world.
We learn a song when we are little called, “This Little
Light of Mine.” The words speak of letting our little light shine, not letting
Satan blow it out, not hiding it under a bushel, and letting it light the whole
world. Can one persons light really make a difference?
If I could see that satellite, hundreds of miles away,
glistening like a star, and if the moon with only the reflection of the sun can
light a path at night, I think the answer to that question is, yes. Our one
little light can make a difference.
We need to let the light of Christ, shine from within us,
spilling out into the darkness. Our one light may be just enough to illuminate
the path that leads to Jesus Christ, for one person. Then that person may light
the way for another. Pretty soon, there are so many lights, it would be
difficult for anyone to miss the path.
When we feel as if our light is ready to go out, we just
need to turn back to Jesus in forgiveness, fellowship, prayer and Bible study
to be rekindled. We are a reflection of His light, so we need to let it shine.
Our little light can make a big difference.
Dear Father,
Help me to reflect your light into this world.
