“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God;
believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so,
would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if
I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me
that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am
going.” John 14:1-4 (NIV)
My dad use to say to me, “The reason why people are never
truly happy in this life is because this is not their final home. If we were
completely happy here, we would never want to go home.” I thought about what
dad said and realized that it is true on so many levels. We are constantly
doing things to make ourselves happy. We go on vacation. We remodel our homes.
We buy new dinnerware or curtains. We buy a new car or boat.
And then there is the
issue of our bodies. Our bodies are deteriorating so we try new face creams,
teeth whiteners, clothes, or maybe even surgery. Eventually, we may need
glasses, hearing aids, or a walking cane. Our bodies are failing.
My mother was an example of that. She was frail, bent over, and so thin that she
was all bones. Her paper thin skin showed every vein and every bruise from the
slightest bump. I remember a time when she stood straight and tall and she
could sing beautifully, loud and strong, but her voice had become so weak she
could barely speak above a whisper. Her body was evident that she was not long
for this world and she actually longed to be rid of her worn out temple. She
was at a point in her life where she wanted to go home.
Dad’s statement resonated with me, we ARE uncomfortable in
this world and in these bodies. There is a deep longing in our hearts for
something better. When Christ returns He will give us a new body that will be
strong, healthy, and beautiful. He will wipe away all our tears and we will truly,
finally, totally, unequivocally be happy dwelling in His love and light. While
we are here on earth, we will never be totally satisfied, because we are not
really home. True satisfaction in Jesus will one day lead us to our final home.
Being with God we will be perfectly contented because there we will be in our
“home sweet home” forever.
Dear Eternal Father,
Thank you for preparing a home for us in eternity. Help us
while we do your work here on earth to proclaim that gift you have given us.
