LOSS CONTROL

Written by:  Jenny Calvert

Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.  And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.  And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”  The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”  So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.  Genesis 11: 1-9 (NRSV)

John has been in the business of loss control for many years.  He makes sure safe practices are implemented in the work place so that injuries do not occur.  One year he was overseeing a job where a company was building the tallest skyscraper in the city.  It was an impressive sight.  When the building was completed John had the satisfaction in knowing that over 700 workers had accomplished this task with no catastrophic injuries.

This reminds me of the first skyscraper mentioned in the book of Genesis, where people came together to not just merely erect a structure that reached to heaven but to build a name for themselves.  Because their ambitions were selfish, the end result was construction abruptly halted and their languages were confused.  It was known as Babel.

Many today are attempting to build their own personal skyscraper, a life of events apart God.  We as Christians, should be a witness to those floundering and help them to see that Christ is the way, truth and life.  We know firsthand that by allowing God to be the master builder, He not only is the solid foundation, and has the perfect blueprint but also provides a safety net to catch us when we fall.  When we become a witness for Christ, we are employed in God’s business of loss control, and we, like John, can have the satisfaction of knowing that we helped others from the catastrophic result of living a life apart from God.

Dear Lord,
Thank-you for keeping us safe in your arms.  Help us to point others to you and the protection you offer.
 In Jesus Name,

 Amen
