All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for
teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that
the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)
My niece and I decided it would be fun to take a ride on our
bikes to explore a country road. Totally unprepared we set out on a warm, sunny
day for our adventure. Our goal was the end of the road. We did not know the
distance or the obstacles, and we didn’t care. We just ambitiously wanted the
feat of this bike ride, knowing we met our objective.
Off we went, legs pumping, hair blowing in the wind,
giggling and encouraging one another, taking in the sights. After an hour our
legs were not pumping quite as fast, the giggling stopped as we gasped for each
breath. We were becoming tired and thirsty. We did not have water, or a pump if
our tires got flat, there were no cell phones in those days, and we had not
trained or planned for this event at all. Because we were ill equipped, I began
to wonder if maybe I had caused my little niece to be in jeopardy.
As Christians, in our trek of life, as we press on towards
the goal, it is important that we are well trained and equipped. We are the
light of the world, spreading God’s word, doing His work showing His
righteousness and love. It’s a long hard journey, and it is important to do all
that we can to be prepared for His service.
If we are to spread the word, then we must be in the word.
Reading the Bible, and allowing God to teach, reproof, correct, and train us to
walk a path of righteousness. We also
need to pray, and be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit, always
listening to His still small voice. We need to fellowship with other Christians
for accountability, and we need to feed our thoughts and minds in ways to help
us grow spiritually. All these things help us to become molded in His likeness,
and prepare us to be competent, and well equipped when we bring the gospel to
the lost.
We then are better prepared to go through the pitfalls that
we are sure to face on this journey. God will give us the stamina to endure,
and guide us on the correct path, taking us to the fields of missions He has
for us.
My niece and I did make it to the end and back. We had
bicycled approximately 15 miles, pumping our coaster bikes, up and down the
rolling Missouri hills. It would have been easier had we been prepared. We
learned a lesson that day. I also know that when I go to be a witness of
Christ, and face the challenges of spreading God’s word, I better go well
equipped.
Dear God,
Thank you for your scripture. Help us to use that scripture
to prepare us for your service.
Amen
