He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the
churches. Revelation 2:17
In school I was a daydreamer. The teacher would drone on and
on and my mind would begin to wander. My thoughts were on a myriad of things, yet
somehow, the teacher’s words would penetrate my dreams. I could hear in part,
but not the whole. I might miss some instructions, but would grasp the main
concept of the lesson. I knew what I needed to learn.
Many of us are in a daydream world, but we somehow wake up
enough to hear when the word of God is spoken. The message of Jesus, dying for
our sins, stirs up some reaction in our inner spirits and minds. We try to ignore it, but it pulls at our heart
strings.
We may have already made up our minds to just be neutral on
this matter. After all, we have depended upon our self, and up to this point it
has served us well. We are successful when we gauge our worth by monetary
standards. We are successful in achievements. We are successful in moralistic
values. We are good people. We give to the needy and have never committed any
crimes. Why would we want to come to Christ when we are already better than our
neighbor who professes Christ and is deplorable?
Comparing ourselves to others, never serves a good purpose.
Yes, there are people who profess Christ with their lips, but maybe their
hearts are not truly His, and their actions reflect it. It really does not
matter, when we hear the calling of Christ, we cannot use others as our
compass, and we cannot use our accomplishments as our guide.
We are being pulled, as if in all our successfulness, there
is something amiss. I think the issue is, we really do not have much of a
choice, because we hear. In Matthew 13:9 Jesus says, “Whoever has ears, let
them hear.” He was not speaking of physical ears on the sides of our head, but
the ears of our heart. Not everyone may be able to hear with their heart at
this time, but for those of us who do, it behooves us to listen.
If you hear the voice of Jesus calling, "Come follow me," don’t delay. If it is coming
through your daydreaming mind, and hitting your heart there is a reason: You
have ears to hear. Let His love knock you off your perch of self-satisfaction. No
sense in resisting His call. His gift is better than you could ever imagine.
Dear Jesus, Thank you for calling out to us personally. Help us not to resist.
Amen
