Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the
spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone
out into the world. 1 John 4:1
My friend Joy, was so excited about a brooch she had
received. It was given to her by a relative that told her it was a gift, long
ago, to her father by a sheikh in Arabia. My friend explained to me, over the
phone that it was 24 karat gold, surrounded by 24 pearls. She sent a picture to me and it indeed was
impressive. It had a large red stone in the center, with an emblem.
She and a friend decided to go to a jeweler to have it appraised
as to its worth. Under a jeweler’s eyes, who studies gems on a daily basis, the
real worth would be revealed.
After several hours, I received a message that the jeweler
said the broach was worthless. So even though she was told a different story
and the brooch looked expensive, it was not. It was a fake.
We are told in the Bible that we are to be careful of false
prophets. They look real, sound real and even get an impressive following. They
may even entice the very elect; Christians.
When they speak they may use scripture and touch on the
truth. The Bible says we must test the spirits to see whether they are from
God. If we are in the Bible and know the word, then when we look closely at these
false prophets, we find many times the Word is twisted. They may change the
word, just enough, to suit their own agenda.
We can test a prophet to see if they exhibit the spirit of a
true Christian. Galatians 5:22-23 says, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and
self-control. There is no law against such things.” When you look closely at a false prophet you
may find, in their own personal lives, enormous flaws in these areas.
The best way to stay on guard is to stay in the Bible.
Saturating ourselves daily in God’s Word will help us to be more aware if we
are hearing the truth or a lie. To my friend, the brooch looked real, but under
the jeweler’s eyes the truth was revealed. Stay in the Word, become
knowledgeable in the truth, let the Holy Spirit guide you, and when you are
presented with a fake, you will know.
Dear Father,
Thank you for your truth. Help us to be on
guard to know the truth from a lie.
In the name of Jesus,
Amen
