BITING DOWN ON INSPIRATION

All Scripture is given by God. And all Scripture is useful for teaching and for showing people what is wrong in their lives. It is useful for correcting faults and teaching the right way to live. Using the Scriptures, those who serve God will be prepared and will have everything they need to do every good work.  2 Timothy 3:16-17

Have you ever bitten down on a piece of food to find something extra that you did not expect? I had a ladybug in my salad once. Thankfully, I saw it before I took a bite. However, I have experienced some unwelcome extras in my food such as: sand in a hotdog, bones in a hamburger, a piece of plastic in fish, pearls in three different oysters, (and let me tell you, those could break teeth, they are so hard), and I even bit down on glass in an ice cream cone. Yuck!

I wish I could say that biting down on the word of God is always pleasant. Frequently, we are soothed and comforted by scriptures. We can find direction, strength, hope, and love from scripture. Yet, there are times that the scripture is not what we expect. There are words that brings us to our knees in repentance. Occasionally we are humbled, chastised, and reprimanded. From time to time we are directed to go places we do not want to go, or tell things we do not want to tell. Other times the Holy Spirit convicts us of our guilt through the written word.

It’s not always a comfortable thing devouring the Holy Scriptures, yet we daily need to dig deep into the word and take what God gives us, being always grateful that He speaks not only pleasing words but words that edify and mold us into His likeness. We sometimes resist the painful process, but we realize that only a God who cares for us individually would continue to work on us until the day we die.

In Revelations 10, the writer was told by the angel to eat a scroll that would be sweet like honey, but when it hit the stomach, it would become bitter. This scroll contained a message from God to be spread to the world. Ezekiel was also told to eat a scroll once. It was sweet to the mouth, but the words on the front and back were sad songs, sad stories, and warnings. Ezekiel was also given this daunting task to spread an unwanted message to the people.

We are to bite down in prayer, meditation, and study of God’s Word. We may not enjoy each dish He serves, but when we eat His meal which is proven to satisfy our true hunger, we will be well equipped to do His work. Go ahead! Bite down on true inspiration.

Thank you dear Father in Heaven for giving us The Word Made Flesh revealed in the Bible. Help us to daily dive into Your word and be inspired by You. Through Christ Jesus I pray, Amen.
